Fashion Incubator Diversifies New Looks for Spring 2011

Although the excitement that I anticipated for this event wasn’t there, on the first night of Chicago’s Fashion Focus events, it did still draw fashionistas from all walks of life that couldn’t wait to view 13 of Chicago’s newest and hottest designers with their 2011 Spring fashions.

The stage inside the Millennium Park tent was buzzing at the week’s first night of Chicago Fashion Incubator. Styles from AGGA B. C/Fan, Evil Kitty, Killigan Gui, Nora del Busto as well as many others, pranced along the catwalk in what would be our 2011 local selections for the upcoming Spring season.

While the “umf” that I wanted or expected wasn’t there, I did enjoy some of the very soft colors, cuts and diverse collections that in no way mimicked the other in this show full of fun pieces.

I’ll also admit that I fell in love with the lingerie line by Dottie’s Delights. They were refreshing flashbacks of  “Madonna” inspired, pointy bustier’, beautiful colors shapes and lots of garter belts. LOVED IT!!

Raquel Welch Receives Chicago Honor

My GREAT friend Steve Starr met up with none other than Raquel Welch recently…

He tells his story below and included some GREAT pictures from the event.

Raquel Welch Receives Focus Award

It is hard to concieve that this beautiful actress whose photo cutout, which I remember when I was 19 years old, stood two stories high atop the Roosevelt Theatre on State Street in Chicago, is now, self admittedly, seventy years old.

In that photo, she wore a skimpy, furry animal skin bikini, and with lush auburn hair swirling to frame, her perfect facial features that were further enhanced with the remarkable skill of a 1966 Hollywood makeup artist, she was promoted as the way glamorous natural cavewomen really looked 1,000,000 years B.C. Welch quickly became an International sex goddess, reigning upon her cinematic throne for decades.

STILL unbelievably gorgeous, Raquel Welch honored Chicago with her iconic presence in the Wolf Ballroom of the Holiday Inn to accept the silver Focus Award presented to her by Bill Zwecker. The Focus is given to women who have made significant contributions to film and also have strong ties to Chicago, where Welch was born Jo Raquel Tejada, September 5, 1940.

The Mistress of Ceremonies was beautiful Micah Materre – WGN News Anchor and Focus Awards were also presented to Emmy Award winning producer Jamie Ceasar and Television and Radio Hostess Merri Dee.  Among the many illustrious guests were Victor Skrebneski who had photographed Raquel for her 40th birthday and Diana Palomar – Vice President Community Affairs ABC 7.

A Starr Premier

Many know Steve Starr, who I always refer to as “photographer extraordinaire“, photographer, writer, form of entertainment– all while he instructs you with his “do this” attitude on how to get you posed just right for a photograph from a super talented, sweet and generous man.

I took the theme personally and as what I consider a dear friend, I wanted to fit in perfectly for the event. I found a magnificent vintage black sequenced dress at Randolph Street, Chicago Vintage Antique Market-with the help of Sally Schwartz and Melissa Sands, as I’ve also become quite the regular at Vintage Market this past year. I topped it off with a beautiful vintage green coat that once belonged to our dear Mr. Starr that was loaned to me by local Jazz wonder, Spider Saloff and gorgeous rhinestone jewelry loaned to me by Laurie Davis of Lulu’s at the Belle Kaye on Lincoln Avenue. I had my hair done in true Rita Hayworth fashion by the incredible Gary Hagstrom and finally made up and polished off by Hernan Rivera of Sin Cosmetics!! I looked like I walked out of the era itself and was pleased to be a part of the magical event.

Steve Starr premiered his new book “STARRLIGHT– Glamorous Latin Movie Stars of Early Hollywood” at the most fitting setting for the showcase, Rumba on Hubbard Street in Chicago.

The book itself is a beautiful piece of art for any home. Not large enough to be considered a coffee table book but just as beautiful as a work of art that you’d like to keep out as a conversation piece. It’s bound in beautiful silver and looks to have Steve’s personality all over it.

The party was a glamorous event. Friends showed up dressed in their Sunday best! Whether they were in vintage masterpiece or current trends, it was a beautiful party.

Steve signed autographs for hundreds while pictures were snapped. Friends and family dined on a full buffet and Starr cake. They also were crooned by the smooth Latin Jazz band, amazed by Tango dancers Daniel Noce and Ramona Nita exhibition.

The full house was welcomed by the gracious Mistress of Ceremonies, Diana Palomar. Diana spoke about how she met Steve and his journey to where he is today. Other wonderful hostesses included Candace Jordan, Dori Wilson, Arabel Alva Rosales, Leticia Herrera and me.

Jesse Charbonier produced wonderful event. There were votive candles on every table (shaped like stars, of course) and everyone left their well wishes in the giant Starr guest book that was ushered around by the gorgeous Victoria Badillo Munoz who’s hair and make-up were done by the always great MGO Fashion Salon on Division Street. It was a superb show of support.

Lots of magnificent photos in the gallery! Enjoy!!

I only can say from the passionate sounds of Ms.Tain Murray, along with the wonderfully sway of guest conductor Maestro Harvey Felder, to the final act of heart pounding JASC Tsukasa Taiko rhythms, I have NEVER experienced anything from variety as well as such a diverse performance.

I always boast about how I love the Sinfonietta for the easy traditional selections but this performance had me at the edge of my seat excited when the drums pounded. The entire show was absolutely AMAZING!!
